FAQ

Preparation, nutrition, delivery. Everything you want to know about Lowpact.

Preparation

Simple, and no washing up. Open the pouch, pour boiling water up to the inner fill line, stir, reseal. Your meal is ready in a few minutes.

The minimum amount of water is printed on the back. If you prefer a looser texture, add a splash more.

Cold slows rehydration down. Slip the pouch under your jacket or into your sleeping bag while it stands. Your body heat keeps it at the right temperature.

⚠️ Handle the pouch with care just after pouring in the boiling water.

The higher you go, the lower the temperature at which water boils. Above 1,500 m, add 1 to 2 minutes of standing time for every additional 300 m.

In practice: a meal that is normally ready in 10 min needs 12 to 14 min at 2,100 m. Still some firm pieces? Reseal the pouch and wait a few minutes more.

Technically possible, but the result will disappoint. Rehydration stays incomplete, takes longer, and the flavours come through far less. A stove remains essential to get the most out of your meals.

You do not need one. Every pouch has a fill line on the inside. Pour up to that mark. If in doubt, start with the minimum and adjust after the first rehydration.

Reseal the pouch and wait another 2 to 3 minutes. Cold, altitude or water sitting just below 100°C are the usual causes. If the problem persists in normal conditions, get in touch.

Nutrition & performance

This is one of our core priorities. Every Lowpact meal exceeds 700 kcal. Our breakfasts exceed 450 kcal. These thresholds were set with a nutritionist specialising in endurance sport, to cover the real needs of a long day out — not simply to take the edge off hunger.

Our recipes were developed with a nutritionist specialising in sport. The aim of every portion is a protein / carbohydrate / fibre balance suited to physical effort, without sacrificing taste or resorting to additives.

Each portion is a complete meal for one person, sized to cover the calorie needs of a day outdoors. On multi-day trips, count one portion per meal per person.

Diets & allergens

5 of our 6 recipes are certified organic. All the vegetables and meat we use are organic and Belgian. We are working towards certification for our breakfasts and for our Chicken Tikka Masala recipe.

Our Tikka Masala Veggie and Pasta al Ragù Veggie recipes are 100% vegetarian and vegan.

Our breakfasts are vegetarian but contain milk. They are not suitable for a strict vegan diet.

None at all. Preservation rests entirely on drying: removing the active water from the food denies bacteria the conditions they need to develop. Nothing needs to be added.

Some recipes contain gluten, lactose or soya. Our meals are produced in a workshop that handles these ingredients, so cross-contamination is possible. Please check the full ingredient and allergen list on each pack before eating.

Storage & technology

Adventure meals: 3 years. Breakfasts: 1 year.

The best-before date is printed on every pack.

Yes. Once the pack is open, moisture and oxygen reach the food. Eat the contents promptly after opening.

Somewhere cool, dry and out of direct light. A cupboard, a dry cellar or your outdoor gear store all work fine.

As a precaution, no. Storage conditions vary from one household to another. Out in the wild is not the moment to take an unnecessary risk.

Drying (our choice) uses gentle heat, forced air and humidity control to remove the active water from the food. Our meals go briefly to 60°C, enough to guarantee food safety while preserving textures and nutrients. Low on energy, small-batch in spirit.

Freeze-drying freezes food to −40°C, then draws the water off by sublimation under vacuum. Effective, but energy-hungry, industrial, and at odds with the Lowpact approach. It can also weaken certain textures.

Production & materials

Cooked, dried and packed in Brussels, Belgium. That is not a marketing line: it lets us control every stage of production and keep transport to a minimum.

Yes. The material is certified for food contact and designed specifically to withstand boiling water without any chemical migration into the food.

On the stove: tip the contents into a pan with a little water to reheat. Keep enough water in there so the base does not catch.

In a bain-marie: not advised. Heat transfer is too slow and it burns fuel for nothing.

Yes, from €49 of purchases. Below that threshold, shipping is calculated according to your destination.

You have the statutory 14 days to return an unopened product in good condition. Opened or damaged packs cannot be taken back, for food hygiene reasons.

If there is a problem with your order, contact us through the form. We always find a solution.

Yes. Several boxes are designed for long trips and expeditions. For a larger project (raid, traverse, group outing), get in touch for a tailored quote.

Sustainability

Not yet through standard waste streams. The barrier layer needed to withstand boiling water and block oxygen makes household recycling impossible as things stand.

Finding a fully eco-designed pack that can meet those constraints is our priority project. We will keep you posted as soon as we have a serious solution.

The heavy-duty ziplock pouch makes an excellent spare rubbish bag on the trail. Once you have finished your meal, use it to gather your small waste (wrappers, paper, tissues). It seals tight, flattens into a pocket and keeps smells and leaks out of your pack.
